The Unforgettable Night

Trey Rabuffo

The year was 2025. The month was November. The snow shined on the roofs of the futuristic houses. Mr. Gray Thomas awoke every day at 6:00 a.m. for work. He worked in a place that was far from serene. He worked in a factory that produced meat. All different kinds of it were being manufactured in this small 10,000 square foot factory. Despite the size of it, the factory was booming and the gears of machines were constantly turning. Nothing ever stopped here. The mentality was always the same...go, go, go, in order to produce the optimum amount of product for customers. Mr. Thomas began showing up to work earlier and earlier, which raised some suspicion from his fellow factory workers. No me knew why he was showing up so early or what he was doing at the wee hours of the morning. Although the factory machines were constantly turning, Mr. Thomas was always the first person to arrive for work and was always the last person to leave. So the question is: what was this mysterious person doing arriving so early and leaving so late? A young and inexperienced worker would soon find out. Grace Johnson, a new employee, had just started this job a week ago. She would soon see a sight that would make her want to quit this strange job. As Christmas time neared, everyone was in good spirits. Well, everyone except Gray Thomas. Yet again, no one knew why he wasn’t in good spirits. No one really knew anything about him, despite him working at the factory for so long. Grace Johnson would soon find out why. It was around 11:00 p.m. on December 20th. Everyone had gone home, except for Grace and Mr. Thomas. Grace had been finishing up some job training, while Mr. Thomas had been doing his usual business. Grace had just finished her training, when all of a sudden she noticed how quiet it was. It was almost too quiet. Alls you could head was slow and steady patter of rain on the windows and the grinding of gears. Grace began to make her way to the exit of the factory, when she noticed a door that was slightly open. Light was streaming through a small crack which illuminated the hallway and cast her shadow across the floor. She became curious as to what was down there. She slowly opened the creaky wooden door. Careful not to make too much noise, she crept down the stairs, all the while with her shadow against the wall. As she got closer and closer to the bottom of the stairs, she began to hear unusual noises for this line of work. She began to see blood spewing close to the bottom of the stairs and a figure hacking away at something...and it wasn’t meat. She got closer and saw a horrific sight. Grace Johnson just discovered Mr. Thomas doing what he does best...hacking up bodies. She didn’t know what to do. Does she stay and watch to get him fired, but risk getting caught, or run back up the stairs and letting his wretched actions continue? She made a bold move. She decided to stay. Mr. Thomas was slowly humming to himself as he was hacking up these bodies. Grace heard “Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm.....hmmmm...hmmm...hmmm”. Mr. Thomas still had no suspicion that somebody was watching him and continued with his work. Grace thought to herself “I just made this discovery and what I do about it could affect me for the rest of my life”, however another voice in her head said “Run. Get out while you can. Save yourself. These two voices were going at it in a head-on clash and Grace didn’t know what voice to listen too. Yet again she decided to stay. Mr. Thomas stopped humming to himself. Something had just interrupted him. He slowly turned his head around and there was Grace, sitting like a deer frozen in headlights, as Mr. Thomas’s eyes grew wide and turned red. She sprinted up the stairs and couldn’t open the door fast enough. Mr. Thomas came rushing after her, and being older, was a couple of paces behind. Grace made it out into the parking lot and was scrambling to find her car. Mr. Thomas opened the door to the factory and Grace began to scream a scream of pure terror and panic. No one was around for miles as it was late and the factory was in a part of Montana that was mainly surrounded by forest and mountains. If someone did in fact hear her scream, it would be a while before help came. Grace finally found her car, but Mr. Thomas noticed what direction she was going in and tried to intercept her. Grace got to her car before he did and started the old, run down Volkswagen as fast as she could. She threw it into reverse and got out of their. She pulled out onto the main road and sped up. As she looked in her rear view mirror she noticed something bright and approaching fast. It was Mr. Thomas, and he could propel himself forward with a jetpack. This mysterious man that no one knew much about was actually an insane criminal mastermind, and he was coming straight for Grace. As Grace was speeding along, trying to outrun Mr. Thomas, she noticed a house with lights on in close proximity to the roadway. The sounds of the jet pack were getting louder and with a car speeding by, the home owner came outside to see what was happening, and caught a glimpse of the chase as it passed by. The homeowner, a 70 year-old man, yelled “Oh my god. I must do something about this!”. The home owner ran inside and dialed 911. He explained to the operator what was happening and the operator dispatched 3 police cruisers to fix what was happening. The police took note of Grace’s position and set up a road block a couple of miles ahead. As the car approached, the police readied their weapons and took aim at Mr. Thomas. The police opened fire and with a thump Mr. Thomas hit the ground. The sergeant in charge yelled “Hold your fire!” and told Officer Jacobs to take point. As they neared the body, Mr. Thomas lay lifeless and motionless. Grace was stopped at the side of the road still in shock as a third officer comforted her and led her away from the scene. Grace realized that she just made a mind blowing discovery...that would change her life forever.
